April 2015 in October 2015 Moms
hey everyone! I recently purchased a home fetal Doppler (I know ppl are divided on this. I decided to buy one after doing research and talking with my husband). Anyways- I'm 13 weeks and have been trying every couple of days to find the heartbeat and no luck. I know everything's okay- I just had my u/s last Friday and it was great I went home and tried the Doppler the first time that day and didn't hear anything. My u/s pics were great- which is fantastic because I thought my extra tummy padding would inhibit the pics from being clear. But now I'm wondering if that's what's happening with the Doppler. My Drs haven't even tried to listen to the heartbeat so I'm wondering if it's normal of plus size moms to have to wait until they're further along to hear the heart beat. Btw I purchased the sonoline b 3hrz one. Thanks for your advice ladies.

I'm plus size and I heard it for the first time at 10 weeks with the doppler. You may have to angle the doppler down under the pubic bone if baby is sitting low.

I'm plus size and I can only get my baby's HB lower down by my pubic line. I'm sure if I had a flat tummy to begin with I prob could hear it higher up since my uterus is higher up now that I'm almost 18 weeks but alas I have a nice fat pad by my belly button so I have to search low. I'm sure as I get bigger and baby moves past my lower belly it will be much easier to find HB higher up

I would assume that extra 'layers' between the doppler and baby could possibly make hearing baby harder when baby is that tiny.

I have some extra abdominal fat and heard mine at 12 weeks. Like the other ladies said, point the Doppler down towards your pubic bone and don't be afraid to apply some pressure. At 12 weeks mine was a very faint HB and it took me a good 15-20 minutes to find it.
I'm 15w and tonight I searched and found it almost immediately and it was loud and clear.

The doctor even had a hard time and finally was able to hear a heart beat at 12 weeks. He was right at my pubic area and pushing hard! My lower abdomen is quite pudgy!

Yah boo, my NP last visit found it, baby moved, then she says "well, you are a little thicker"...yah, thanks I know. I was thinking of getting one too, but doppler seems to annoy all of my babies, they move every time!

I takes practice to use the doppler. Especially early stage its pretty difficult to find the heartbeat. I have the same doppler

I found it this morning!! So happy it's the best sound on the planet. The placenta sounded cool too, but to hear baby's heartbeat- omg so cool.

I'm pretty large. About 320 lbs. I heard the heartbeat via ultrasound at 8 weeks. They tried the Doppler at my last visit at 13 weeks but I was too fat for them to hear anything so they had to do another ultrasound to check the heartbeat.

I definitely agree with everyone else in saying try much lower, towards the pubic area & use some pressure. I've got lots of lower abdominal "padding" lol but I got to hear the HB at 10wks. Good luck!!

I didn't hear on my own Doppler until last week 17 weeks but I also gave up trying after 10 weeks or so. You'll find it.
