Destinations we offer > Tanzania > Resorts > Pole Pole Resort

Consisting of only ten bungalows, it promises personal attention and service. "Pole Pole" means "slowly, slowly" in Swahili.

Situated in the Utende area of Mafia Island, the resort is Archipelago's main base. It is set in a shady, breezy spot facing a sea of the deepest blue and looking over at the islands of Chole, Juani and Jibondo.

Owned and operated by a young Italian couple, Pole Pole Bungalow Resort is a new kind of luxury travel experience that combines the principles of ecotourism, a small resort setting and one of the most pristine and exotic environments in the world.

Travel and Leisure magazine has recently named Pole Pole as one of the top 25 ecolodges in the world.Wastewater is treated in a phyto-purification system; hotel profits fund local education initiatives; and the resort launched the first recycling program in the 325,000-acre Mafia Island Marine Park, a protected coral reserve.

The atmosphere, often described by guests as 'unpretentious luxury', is warm and relaxed, the service is personalised and punctual.

Set in as shady, breezy spot overlooking the countless shades of blue of the Indian Ocean, Pole Pole has a reputation for its first class cuisine; based on seafood, that offers the best of different culinary traditions, with an Italian touch.

Here they promote a culturally and enviromentally sustainable tourism. Mafia's history and Swahili culture can be explored through visits to ancient ruins and friendly local communities.

A short sail in a traditional dhow will take you to one of the many small islets of the archipelago or for a picnic lunch on a pristine sandbar.

The Bungalows

Seven 'Luxury bungalows suites', elegant and spacious, are set among the coconut palms overlooking the bay. The rooms are furnished with carved and antique pieces. Twin and double beds are available and an extra bed can be provided.

Two bungalows are ‘family’ type with two rooms separated by the bathroom and a small corridor for privacy.

The large private verandahs are furnished with a Zanzibari bed, chairs, table and an armchair. Each bungalow is self-contained, the bathroom is spacious and comfortable. There are two ceiling fans, one on the verandah and one in the bedroom above the bed.

We are a low environmental impact resort with a state-of-the-art phyto-purification plant which is a special process of treating wastewater to prevent environmental pollution.

Almost all Mafia's best diving is at depths of less than 30m so it is a sport diver's paradise. The reefs of the archipelago offer a staggeringly beautiful and varied display of marine life.

The excellent condition and high diversity of the reefs stimulated the creation of Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania's first marine park. Examples of most kinds of tropical marine habitat occur here, including exposed fringing reefs, rock walls, soft coral and algae-dominated reefs.

The diversity of animal and plant life is hard to match, with over 48 genera of coral and 400 species of fish so far identified. There are excellent examples of giant table coral, delicate seafans, whip coral, and huge stands of blue-tipped staghorn coral.

A short trip by car will take you to Kilindoni harbour. In support of local fishermen, involved in a project for protection of whale sharks, guests will use their local boats and skills to spot the gentle giants quietly feeding on plankton a few hundred meters from the shore. In spite nobody can assure that they will be seen, in the period between October and March the chances are extremely high and the hotel gets in touch early in the morning with local guides that spot them and signal their position. Swimming with whale sharks, the largest fish on the planet, requires no special skills but even looking at these beautiful creatures from the boat is an unforgettable experience.
