Egypt - Land of the Pharaohs

Abu Simbel: Based on the shore of Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel is a testament to ancient and modern engineering. These temples, built 3000 years ago by Ramses 2nd, were threatened with flooding due to the High Dam in Aswan. The answer was to move the complete structure piece by piece and relocate above the flood waters. A day excursion can easily be arranged from Aswan and it is well worth it.

Aswan: On the border between Egypt and Nubia it is recognised as the gateway to Africa. You will notice a distinct difference from the rest of Egypt. It is more laid back, some would say more African, in atmosphere. Best known for its dam it also has the Temple of Philae and is the southern most port of the Nile Cruises. It is also home to the Old Cataract Hotel. Overlooking the Nile transport yourself back in time to the days of Kitchener, Gordon and Agatha Christie novels. Colonialism at it's most opulent!

Cairo: Contradictory adjectives describe Cairo, modern and ancient, chaotic and peaceful to name two. One thing that is certain is a trip will not be forgotten. The reasons for going are Giza & Saquarra Pyramids, The Sphinx, Egyptian Museum, Coptic Cairo, the bizarre of Khan El Khaleli. It will also give you an insight into how ordinary Egyptian people go about their life.

Luxor: This is where it all began, the ancient city of Thebes. It's impossible to comprehend touching a man made structure 5000 years old. You can not even compare it to Sir Cliff Richard, it's been around that long!! Wonders of the World are a term that is used frivalously. Luxors antiquities certainly deserve this label. 670 km south of Cairo on the Nile its centre is dominated by a temple of the same name. Take a horse and carriage along the corniche to the much larger and imposing Karnak Temple. the 'Jewel in the Crown' is the West Bank where the secrets of the Valley of the Kings, Queens and Workers are to be seen. It is here that the grandeur of Queen Hatchepsuts Funerary temple can be seen.

Nile Cruises: For those interested in ancient Egypt a cruise along the Nile is the most relaxing way to view the Land of the Pharaohs. Three, Four or Seven night itineraries can be taken with ports of call at Luxor, Esna, Erdfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan.

Desert Oasis: For those with time and the inclination the desert oasis of Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla, Khargah and Siwa. Especially interesting is the oasis of Siwa with it's intricate mudbrick town. The desert scenary around Siwa is breathtaking. The inhabitants are descendants of a bedouin race with a language and custom different to Arabic. It is believed that near here was the burial place of Alexander The Great. However it must be said Siwa is for the more adventurous type.
